Availability of data is critical for Exeter Chiefs

The demand for 24/7 availability of data in an always-on society is startling relevant for Exeter Chiefs.

Like any business, they need to be able to access their data whenever they need it. Their data consists of video clips and statistics of their previous games, as well as the team they will be facing on a match day to analyse their performance and how they are going to tackle, literally, their opposite man.

For the strength & performance department, they use a considerable quantity of this sports intelligence on the players’ performance in terms of metres they have run, their heart rate and much more.

Data centre storage
All this information is securely stored in servers in our data centre. The players and coaches link to it via a private fibre internet leased line. It is always available to them. They do not have to think about it. Although, head of the strength and conditioning team Mark Twiggs did consider where the data is stored in our video above.

Without access to this data, Exeter Chiefs’ training week would look very different. Consider how your business’s working week would look if you could not access your data? No access to customer records, billing information, documents, spreadsheets, etc. Without this business intelligence, work would soon grind to halt.

It illustrates just how important storage and access to your data is. The traditional method relied upon an on-site comms room with all users connecting to its servers via a local area network (LAN). This data may have been backed up to a tape every night and taken off site. Any access to the data from an off-site location, i.e. for a home or mobile worker, was either simply unachievable or facilitated through a VPN connection.

Automatically backed up to a secondary location
A modern-day solution sees data stored off site and accessed via secure connections, like a fibre internet leased line, while being automatically backed up to a secondary location.

This is the service Exeter Chiefs and many of our other customers enjoy from us. Many are nervous about signing up for a multi-tenanted public cloud service and prefer a private cloud set-up, such as a data centre, instead.

With the availability of data signifying the availability of your business, an off-site data solution is the go-to model for modern day businesses. If you would like to migrate to a private cloud solution, please do not hesitate to contact us for advice.

Former newspaper journalist, Caroline joined the company in 2008 with no previous knowledge of the industry.

She set about stripping back all the jargon to produce plain English marketing collateral to support the sales teams. Now slightly more well-versed in the dark arts of voice, connectivity and data services, Caroline writes blogs, case studies, data sheets and social media updates to engage with potential and existing customers.

This industry is far cry from her previous working life when she worked as communications manager for Exeter Chiefs and Northampton Saints.
