Happy birthday to the internet

The internet recently celebrated its 28th birthday. It may not be a milestone anniversary but it has struck a chord with me as I have just started a new job that is dominated by connectivity products and I have never lived in a world where the internet did not exist.

As a 20-year-old, I have always used Google and other search engines – some of them no longer with us – to find out any information I have ever needed. And yet my new colleagues remember the days of the fax machine and when one wall of the office was covered with shelves bearing all the latest Yellow Pages. Incidentally, the telephone is 141 years old this week too.

I do remember having to use dial-up to get onto the internet at home but now I access it using fibre broadband at home and 4G and 3G when I am out and about, while at work I benefit from a whole range of connectivity options.

At home, I use the internet for gaming, streaming, banking, shopping, etc., and, in all honestly, I do not remember life when I did not rely on the www for all these things. 

At work, too, our reliance on the internet is huge. Whether businesses use it to sell their products or services via a website, for banking, marketing, email and access to a growing range of cloud-based applications, they use it every minute of every working day. I literally cannot imagine what life would have looked like without the internet while my more senior colleagues give me wry smiles and talk about letters, Telex machines and using the phone on a regular basis!

With so much reliance on the internet, how we connect to it is vital…as I am quickly finding out in my new role in our cloud & connectivity team. Whereas I am very content to use my broadband at home, I am very quickly realising that it is not suitable for business use.

If your broadband goes down, there are no guaranteed fix times, so businesses could be without a connection to the internet for a week or more. I cannot ever remember being without the internet for that long and I cannot imagine how devastating that would be for a business.

So, from a true millennial, I wish the internet a very happy birthday and revel in all that it offers me at home and at work.
