Peter Symonds College

The background

South West Communications Group provides Peter Symonds College with a flexible and efficient telephone system that saves it money year on year.

Peter Symonds College is a sixth form college that offers a broad choice of courses for 16 to 19-year-olds of all academic abilities in and around Winchester. It is the only sixth form college nationally to offer boarding places, frequently to those in forces schools abroad, but also to nationals of the Falkland Islands.

The challenge

The College needed to replace its entire cabling infrastructure and wanted to use this opportunity to upgrade its existing telephone system to link the 2 college sites together and to try to reduce costs by cutting down on the number of lines being used on the campus.

The College needed the flexibility to add extensions when required to cope with busier times in the academic year, such as the exam period, and also the ability to handle a high level of calls, especially in the early mornings when the reception staff were contacted regarding student absenteeism.

Peter Symonds College were keen to minimise disruption for their staff and students, so any work undertaken needed to be carried out in the holidays.

The solution

South West Communications Group was awarded the contract and provided Peter Symonds College with 2 Toshiba CTX telephone systems linked via their existing leased line private circuit using IP telephony as part of a flexible solution that included the following:

  • Direct dial-in (DDI) numbers
  • Automated attendant, including absence voicemail
  • Voicemail with email integration
  • Free inter-site calls
  • Call reporting software
  • System administration software
  • Shared handsets for communal teaching areas
  • Tannoy facility for broadcasting messages
  • Built-in resilience
  • Call routing lines and minutes service
