Kings' School

The background

South West Communications Group provides Kings’ School with a consolidated telephony solution that befits a large, busy and forward-thinking educational establishment.

Kings’ School, in Winchester, Hampshire, is a mixed comprehensive school for 11 to 16 year-olds situated on a large campus in a residential area on the southern outskirts of Winchester. It is the National Centre of Excellence for Virtual Schools and has recently been awarded Business and Enterprise College Specialist status. Kings' is a large school with about 1,800 pupils. It is a designated school for pupils with physical disabilities and also has a boarding house for 30 boys.

The challenge

Kings’ School’s existing BT telephony system was outdated and as such meant it had become very difficult to maintain.

Like many schools, Kings’ receptionists were particular busy during the mornings when parents rang in to report pupil absenteeism due to illness. As a large school with a various faculties and buildings, it needed to reduce the volume of calls to prevent congestion on their already very busy reception lines.

They were also being supplied by a number of different network providers which was proving costly and difficult to manage.

The solution

South West Communications Group installed the Alcatel-Lucent OmniPCX Office telephony system at Kings’ School along with its Lines & Minutes service as part of a cost-effective, consolidated solution that included the following:

  • Savings of more than £300.00 per year
  • Direct dial numbers (DDIs)
  • Automated
  • A Window-based programming tool
  • Call barring
  • Voicemail boxes & virtual pigeon holes
  • PC telephony
  • Hunt groups
