Chard Town Council

The background

South West Communications Group supplies a converged telephony and data solution to meet Chard Town Council’s goal of becoming a cutting edge beacon among local government organisations.

Chard Town Council serves a population of around 14,000 who live in the market town of Chard in Somerset, situated on the main A30 road close to the borders of Devon and Dorset, and 15 miles south west of Yeovil.

The challenge

Chard Town Council was relocating from the offices it shared with South Somerset District Council to The Guildhall. However, the Guildhall had no existing voice or data infrastructure from which the Council could run either a modern-day telephone system or its data network.

As Chard Town Council had previously shared South Somerset District Council’s infrastructure, it was therefore starting from scratch and required virtually every component element necessary to create an efficient and reliable communications solution suitable for a Council’s needs. The task of inviting various companies to quote for each separate element needed was a daunting task; however, South West Communications Group’s experience in all areas of voice, data and Internet infrastructure meant that it was able to provide all that it required.

The solution

South West Communications Group provided a single communications solution that included the following:

  • Cat5 cabling
  • Local area network (LAN) switches
  • Servers
  • Desktop and notepad PCs
  • Off-site data backup service
  • Toshiba IP-CIX 100 telephone system
  • Hot desking facilities
  • Lines and Minutes call routing service
  • Mobile phones
