City College Plymouth

The background

South West Communications Group meets a very tight deadline to provide City College Plymouth with a point to point microwave link suitable for both voice and data traffic.

City College Plymouth provides a wide range of academic and vocational courses to 3,485 full-time and 14,318 part-time students, including those attending evening classes. It employs 806 people across 7 sites in the city.

The challenge

City College Plymouth had taken over the Marine Skills Centre at Picquet Barracks in Cumberland Road to continue their work in bringing together key players such as Babcock Marine, Princess Yachts, Maritime Training Plymouth, the University of Plymouth and the many companies that make up the marine industry in Plymouth.

The College wanted to have the centre up and running as part of its city-wide campus at the end of April and required the Marine Skills Centre to be linked to its main site in Kings Road to do so. The link needed to be capable of supporting both voice and data traffic.

Previous advice had led the College to believe that it would need a leased line for this link and it asked South West Communications Group to design a solution with this in mind. However, following a site survey, South West Communications Group’s engineers established near line of sight between the two buildings and recommended that a point to point microwave link would provide the most efficient connectivity solution for the College.

The solution

Detailed surveys and testing were carried out including a data throughput measurement and the inspection of proposed mounting points for the devices. South West Communications Group also used computer modeling to establish the best possible line of sight, mounting positions and correct range between the transmitters taking account of the landscape topography.

South West Communications Group installed a high performance Motorola private, reliable and robust  point to point microwave solution which was fully tested to ensure it provides the best possible coverage and connection speeds.
