Patients pager solution gains regional recognition
South West Communications Group’s patient pager solution has attracted the attention of a website aimed at business leaders in the South West.
Southwestbusiness.co.uk has published an article about the technological changes taking place at North Bristol NHS Trust, in which South West Communications Group has had close involvement.
South West Communications Group is in the process of delivering a multi-faceted £2 million-plus solution to the Trust, which is the fifth largest healthcare trust in the UK.
The solution includes a new 7,000-user telephone system for the Trust’s two hospitals, Southmead and Frenchay, which incorporates a range of sophisticated applications including an interactive speech directory so patients can speak the name of the person they want to contact and be automatically put through, automatic appointment reminders, an alarm management system for potentially life-saving equipment, lone worker alarms and video conferencing, as well as waiting room pagers.
The pagers are being used at the Barbara Russell Children's Unit so that parents can take a break from the ward while their children are having surgery knowing that they will be notified when the youngster returns.
This rest of the work will continue during the coming years as the Trust builds a digital ‘super hospital’ with the solution ultimately serving up to 9,000 members of staff across 200 sites, including community bases. It is part of the Trust’s continued drive to embrace technology in order to make the healthcare experience easier and more efficient for patients and staff.
South West Communications Group’s sales director Sarah Flowers said: “It is pleasing to see our work written about and talked about in business circles. We are very proud of the solution we have designed for North Bristol NHS Trust and hope we can use elements of it to serve other hospitals and healthcare organsiations in the South West and further afield in the future.”

South West Communications Group in the running for fourth industry award
South West Communications Group has been named among the finalists for the Comms National Awards 2010.
The Exeter-based communications experts have been announced as one of four finalists in the resellers’ “Enterprise Vertical Solution” category for its ground-breaking work with North Bristol NHS Trust.
Regarded as the Oscars of the voice and data communications industry, South West Communications Group will be hoping to add the Comms National title to the three prizes they have already collected this year.
South West Communications Group won the Federation of Communication Services’ “Communications Provider of the Year” and both “Reseller of the Year” for large businesses and organisations and “Overall Reseller of the Year” at the Comms Business Awards ceremony.
All three awards won this year resulted from entries regarding the innovative, multi-faceted solution South West Communications Group is currently rolling out for North Bristol NHS Trust, the fifth largest healthcare trust in the UK.
The solution includes a new 7,000-user telephone system for the Trust’s two hospitals, Southmead and Frenchay, which incorporates a range of sophisticated applications including an interactive speech directory so patients can speak the name of the person they want to contact to be automatically put through, automatic appointment reminders, an alarm management system for potentially life-saving equipment, lone worker alarms, waiting room pagers and video conferencing.
This work will continue over the coming years as the Trust builds its new technology-led hospital with the solution ultimately serving up to 9,000 members of staff across 200 sites, including community bases. It is part of the Trust’s continued drive to embrace technology in order to make the healthcare experience easier, safer and more efficient for patients and staff.
Harry Langley, managing director of South West Communications Group, said: “What’s most pleasing about this nomination for another nationally recognised award is that it reinforces the credibility of our previous awards by other bodies this year and that it hasn’t just been luck so far! Many different judges have all agreed this particular project stands out from those of our competitors to deserve national recognition.”
Chairman of judges Paul Cunningham said: "The judges were extremely impressed by the quality of the entries received this year. These awards have taken another major step forward in demonstrating the resilience and talent in our industry. The ability of channel players to deliver service and genuine return on investment to customers was paramount in the judging process and this was evident in all the successful entries."
The Comms National Awards final will be held at The Hilton, Park Lane, London, on October 14.

South West Communications Group gives Bideford College access to interactive learning
South West Communications Group has recently been awarded a sizable contract to provide a wireless, ICT-rich environment that could be a blueprint for schools and colleges in the future.
The Exeter-based communications specialist has designed an Alcatel-Lucent multi-media network for voice, data, video, CCTV and digital signage for Bideford College. The network comprises a local area network and a wide-ranging WiFi solution.
South West Communications Group’s specialist engineering team has already begun the installation process at the College’s brand new £44 million building that is set to be completed before the start of the new academic year.
The new wired data network will connect all 200-plus staff and more than 1,600 students with access to full multi-media content, such as video streaming and audio visual presentations, providing the latest tools for interactive, modern-day teaching and learning.
However, it is the campus-wide wireless WiFi solution that will give the students the ability to roam the site, both inside the building and outside in its grounds, giving them access to College resources from laptops and mobile-enabled WiFi devices, such as iPhones and iPads.
The solution also provides a new Alcatel-Lucent IP telephone system, which will use the new data network to connect to the 180 telephone extensions within the college, to take advantage of cost savings and the streamlined working practices associated with IP technology.
South West Communications Group sales director Sarah Flowers said: “This project represents an innovative approach into the provision of data in schools and colleges. It also provides a blueprint for educational establishments in the implementation of data, voice, digital signage and video, including streaming media across entire college campuses. We are proud to be involved with Bideford College and its vision to become the ‘School of the Future’.”
Mike Newby MBE, Bideford College’s project co-ordinator, said “Having looked in depth at the range of technologies available to meet with Bideford College’s aspirations for site-wide access and connectivity, it was identified that not only did South West Communications Group provide a system that met with the intent but that, as a company, they showed the ability to listen to the customer’s requirements.
“They ably demonstrated that the systems could achieve sufficient resilience and capacity to allow all projected use, and more, within budgetary constraints. The knowledge and customer awareness of the on-site installation and technical team, along with the off-site project management team, have been a creditable asset to the way in which the systems have been bedded in at the College.”
