How secure are your video meetings?

How secure is your video conferencing?

Throughout 2020, people communicated with their families, friends and colleagues through video meetings. There were several platforms available, with Zoom and Microsoft Teams being the most utilised. However, one of them garnered a lot of negative press due to its lack of security and a court case that was recently settled for more than £60 million pounds!

The term “Zoombombing” is when uninvited guests can join video meeting sessions and, in some cases, hijack them to cause havoc. This came to light in 2020 when passwords for Zoom sessions were shared out on social media platforms. An incident in Gloucestershire saw an unknown person use the passcode from a social media post to present indecent images to a children’s yoga class*.

Even though the passcode issue was fixed, prior to that it was reported** that many other Zoom video meetings had been infiltrated by uninvited guests too.

Video conferencing has become a way of life for businesses for staff meetings with remote workers or customers, so they need to ensure their video and chat platforms are secure to prevent interruption and security breaches.

How secure is Microsoft Teams?
Microsoft Teams’ security is enabled by default, so when you first set it up, it meets ISO 27001, ISO 27018 and HIPAA compliance regulations out of the box. Teams also comes with two-factor and single sign-on, which IT administrators can easily control through Active Directory, to ensure logins are secure for staff using different devices.

The beauty of using Active Directory ensures that all data, including video meetings, sent through Teams is encrypted from any unwanted guests. Active Directory manages user authentication for Teams and verifies staff credentials. It limits guest access to the main network to keep it secure.

All data sent through Teams, including files, instant messages, etc. is backed up by Azure in your local region, so it meets all data compliance and security regulations within your country.

If you are using Teams as a telephone system your voicemail messages are all stored in your mailbox which is hosted in Exchange, keeping the email and data secure.

With more businesses adopting new methods of working, ensuring your staff have an easy-to-use and secure video meeting, instant messaging and file sharing platform becomes essential. Don’t take the risk of uninvited guests turning up in your video meetings.
