Cisco Duo MFA

With cyber-crime on the rise, along with identity theft and brute-force attacks, every business should be looking at multi-factor authentication methods. When businesses opened their core networks to allow for home working during the pandemic, the risk of remote security breaches increased almost overnight. Remote working plans typically fall short on security, due to the need for a quick solution rather than the right solution.

As the year 2021 rolls on, business are now looking at remote working as a permanent solution, allowing users to continue to work from home on a full-time or on a part time-basis. While largely positive for businesses and their staff, it does increase the risk of cyber-attacks and data theft. Four in 10 businesses (39%) and a quarter of charities (26%) report having cyber security breaches or attacks in the last 12 months*.

We have been using Cisco Duo to enable businesses to give their staff the freedom to work remotely while increasing security with the introduction of multi-factor authentication (MFA). MFA is a secondary authentication method that will prevent user access to internal systems until another method of authentication has been conducted. This can be via a text message to a mobile device, a Cisco Duo mobile application click or via an AnyConnect VPN integration.

Cisco Duo can be integrated into Windows, Microsoft 365, VPN, RDS or bespoke solutions with ease. Cisco Duo is not only an MFA solution, it can also use its device trust feature to ensure browsers and operating systems are up to date.

Cisco Duo come in three different packages. Each solution is covered below.

Duo MFA
Duo’s two-factor authentication (2FA) establishes trust in users’ identities and protects every user with an easy and reliable experience. Traditional 2FA can take months to deploy, requires professional services and drives up total cost of ownership with ongoing management. Duo MFA delivers security at a lower cost with a faster, cloud-based deployment, along with simplified authentication for users and admins with quick, push notification-based approvals with support for smartphones, smartwatches and U2F tokens.

Duo Access
Duo Access takes everything in Duo MFA and supercharges it! It delivers unified device visibility through an admin dashboard that includes all corporate-owned and bring your own devices (BYOD) in your corporate environment.

As mentioned before, Duo Access checks devices for secure, up-to-date software, enabled security settings, and location and network data. Admins can set policies that allow or restrict access to apps based on individual users and groups, location, network data, device security and other contextual information.

Duo Beyond
Based on the zero-trust security model, Duo Beyond empowers you to base app access decisions on the trust established in user identities and the trustworthiness of their devices, instead of the networks from where access originates. It combines everything available in Duo Access plus the ability to differentiate between corporate and employee-owned devices. Duo Beyond allows admins to publish internal applications on the internet. Users are able to access on-premises and cloud apps from a single dashboard.
