South West Communications Group has scooped the New Employer of the Year Award 2018 at the Exeter College Apprentice & Employer Awards.

swcomms’ award was in recognition of the significant apprentice scheme that was launched last year with 17 members of staff taking part in an ICT course especially tailored for the business.

In addition, the Exeter-based business communications and IT providers have recruited three other apprentices, two in the IT department and one in the accounts team.

Brian Lodge, swcomms’ managing director, said: “Our aim is to support up to 40 employees through the Exeter College NVQ course in the next two to three years. It is a board aspiration that they will increase their overall technical knowledge of the technology we sell, as well as enhancing their management, administrative and customer skills.

swcomms is going through a change in culture. The significant investment in this apprenticeship scheme helps underpin our strategic direction and gives a common sense of purpose and togetherness to all our staff. We are delighted to receive this award in recognition of our dedicated efforts to the apprenticeship scheme.”

swcomms has had to embrace change following an industry transformation which has seen a shift towards intuitive cloud-based products. These are sold on a more service-orientated monthly subscription basis, with businesses like swcomms providing layers of servces that complement each other.

This awards ceremony is held at Sandy Park each year to celebrate the apprentice achievements and honouring the employers that support the work of the Exeter College’s award-winning apprenticeship programme.

Mike Blakeley, director of apprenticeships & employer engagement at Exeter College, said: “The growth in Exeter College’s apprenticeship programme has been significant in the last three years. With more than 950 businesses affiliated to our apprenticeship programme, we are fortunate to have high quality and forwarding-thinking organisations supporting our endeavours.

“This award recognises the dedication and drive of the board and the hard work and commitment of their staff in launching this programme. swcomms stood out in the list of outstanding nominees as a truly exceptional partnership supporting their staff training and development aims through the use of apprenticeships. Well done to all involved.”
