Almy & Thomas Solicitors

swcomms provides Almy & Thomas Solicitors with a scalable, future-proof, cloud-hosted telephone system that gives them the flexibility to efficiently handle all client calls. 

Torquay-based Almy & Thomas has served clients in the South Devon area since 1920. Almy & Thomas had been using an ageing telephone system. It was no longer supported at a manufacturer level. This meant that if it failed, there would be no guarantee of a fix.


They were also using ISDN telephone lines, which are due to be ceased by Openreach in 2025. The firm had started to receive calls from other providers encouraging them to switch from ISDN to the new internet-based alternatives, but decided to switch with swcomms, a company they knew and trusted. Almy & Thomas wanted a telephone system that would see them through the 2025 switch-off and beyond. They also wanted a system that would support remote and mobile working.


They chose a Gamma Horizon cloud-based telephone system, which uses internet connectivity rather than ISDN lines, to benefit from the following:


Mobile working
Their office phones are now twinned with their mobile phones to give them a single number for all contact. They also receive voicemails as email sound file attachments to be retrieved with ease. This means partners and other fee earners stay contactable when away from the office, so they should never miss a call or message.


Out-of-office mode
Depending on the time of day, week or year or situation, clients can be met with different messages for example, when the office is closed, callers are informed of an alternative form of contact and advised of the office opening hours.


All-inclusive monthly subscription cost
The firm’s telecoms costs are all covered by one fixed monthly payment, including lines, support and updates. Calls to UK landlines and mobiles are free too.


The Horizon solution deployment was tricky due to the new cables required in an old building with very thick walls. Our experienced engineers completed the job with minimum disruption. Following installation, the firm’ is looked after by a dedicated swcomms account manager. Our support desk and customer service teams are also available to help them with any queries that may arise in the future.


Almy & Thomas Solicitors decided to act ahead of the ISDN switch-off to not only replace an ageing telephone system that was at risk of failure, but to benefit from improved technology. This has given the firm more flexibility while ensuring they can handle all incoming calls.
