Lead forensics Script

Devonport High School

Devonport High School for Girls in Plymouth is a large school with more than 800 11 to 18-year-old students.

The issue:

Along with several other Plymouth schools, they were contacted by the Department for Education (DfE) informing them of the Connect the Classroom scheme that offers funding to upgrade schools’ Wi-Fi connectivity to more robust and reliable solutions.

Devonport High School for Girls had a local area network installed 10 years ago. Some components of the network infrastructure were end-of-life, so the school contacted swcomms to help them make the most of the Connect the Classroom funding.

The solution:

Following a full site survey to ensure we could offer a complete solution that would meet both the funding’s strict criteria and the school’s needs, we proposed a Cisco Meraki solution. The Cisco Meraki solution has a 10-year licence that includes support, and all hardware comes with a lifetime warranty to give full peace of mind to the school.

The Meraki access points are all Wi-Fi 6 standard, which is the most up to date of its kind, with faster speeds, better coverage and higher capacity when connecting to multiple devices at once. Access points were strategically placed throughout the site to eliminate any dead spots.

We assisted with the completion of the DfE application, ensuring the criteria was met to access the funding. Upon approval, our project manager and engineers deployed a replacement local area network with CAT6 and fibre cabling to connect 41 internal access points.

We were able to install the solution during the Easter break in time for the start of the new term. The solution was fully configured to ensure zero disruption to the running of the school when the students returned. This seamless transition also involved the replacement of most of the school’s data cabinets to ensure the new kit was housed correctly.

Staff at the school were provided with training courses supplied by Meraki. The web-based monitoring and management tool allows the IT department to keep an eye on the network in real time. If there is an issue, staff will be notified immediately, and any firmware updates, new features and new bug fixes are delivered automatically, with no manual downloads or updates required. Staff can proactively monitor and self-manage the solution themselves, without the hassle and costly requirements of a third-party should any problems arise.

Devonport School for Girls now has a local area network and Wi-Fi solution that is fit for purpose and can support the ever-growing digital requirements of both staff and students.

The testimonial:

"swcomms were thoroughly professional from the outset. They proposed a state-of-the-art Cisco Meraki solution with an intuitive management interface, which easily fulfilled the DfE requirements.

“The installation team was excellent and courteous, completing the onsite project work in under eight days, leaving us with a high speed, high-capacity network infrastructure, and wireless network.

“I would have no hesitation in recommending swcomms for all IT infrastructure and networking installations.”
