We help the education sector embrace digital learning with Wi-Fi or wireless local area networks (wLANs) designed for schools, colleges and universities.

Decent Wi-Fi is critical to the education sector. In fact it was once described as “vital to a 21st Century learning environment”* by the E-Learning Foundation. But there are some schools that are lagging behind the wireless connectivity trend which means their pupils are unable to fully embrace digital learning in all subjects.

Mobile and smart devices have revolutionised the way schools are run - especially during the pandemic - and the way pupils learn, with schools either investing in more tablets – some on a 1:1 basis – or allowing pupils to use their own devices on their premises. This shift has made Wi-Fi a necessary commodity. Staff and pupils expect to have the freedom to roam with devices, while also linking to whiteboards, DECT handsets, digital signage and so much more.

Like any technology. Wi-Fi hardware will need updating at least every five years to accommodate the latest standards. To explain, the latest standard is called Wi-Fi 6 (also known as 802.11 AX). Any access points older than this will start to struggle as they won't be able to operate at the newer standards. New school tablets, laptops, PCs and phones may be compatible with the new Wi-Fi standards but when they are connected to older access points, they will revert to the lower standard.

Here are a few signs that your Wi-Fi hardware is no longer working well enough:

  • Dead spots with no coverage
  • Inability to connect to the Wi-Fi network
  • Slow speeds
  • Security breaches
  • Lack of guest access/guest management
  • Limited network management tools

Some schools are being offered grants to replace ageing Wi-Fi networks with DfE Connect the Classroom funding. We have already designed solutions to meet the strict criteria for this funding.

However, we can provide Wi-Fi to suit any budget for any sized school. We use a consultancy-style approach to establish current and future needs in order to propose the best technically and commercially suitable solution. We use with Cisco Meraki, Ruckus and Ubiquiti solutions to meet specific coverage, capacity, resilience and security needs.
